Who is Your Target Audience?

You have started a business, and you want to service anyone and everyone you can, which is great! And, you think, Everyone could use my services, right? . . .

Well, the answer is “Maybe“. . .

You, absolutely, want to create awareness and draw as many clients, who could benefit from your services, as possible. Keep in mind that in the current economy, this is not a cost-effective strategy for any business. You want to have a well-defined target audience. This will allow you to focus your marketing dollars, messages, and other efforts on a specific market that is more likely to buy from you than other markets.

The question is: “Who are these prospective clients?” Do you really know? Have you clearly defined them? Have you determined:

What does that “perfect” client look like?
What would attract them?
Do you know what they really need?

Consider creating a customer profile. A customer profile is a comprehensive analysis of your ideal client, and the best way to reach them and obtain them as a customer. This profile will include their goals, services that would matter to them most, and strategic messaging that will attract them.

Here are some ways to get started on creating a customer profile:

  1. Consider who has been your customer in the past
  2. Create a broad description of who they are first
  3. Survey them
  4. Request customer feedback

This can be a daunting task, and the steps to get to a clearly defined audience can be confusing. Often, a business owner wants to stop at the broader description, but they are doing themselves and their business a disservice. It is always best to seek the advice and help of a professional, with an objective viewpoint, who can assist you with making this task work for you.

What Does Your Marketing Plan Look Like?

planOften, small business owners believe the business plan and marketing plan are one and the same. THEY ARE NOT! If you have a comprehensive business plan, there should be a place for marketing, but it is usually very brief and does not detail the strategies and tactics. You must also have a comprehensive marketing plan. It is wonderful starting a business, but if no one is aware your business exists – guess what? – it won’t exist for very long…

Now after reading this, many of you will probably do an internet search or go to your local library/book store to find some information on marketing plans. Every how-to book or internet search is going to have a different take on the essential elements of a marketing plan.

Frankly, your marketing plan will depend on several factors: your business industry, company size, target audience, goals/objectives, and budget. Once the plan is complete, it should provide you with a clear direction for your marketing efforts. Keep in mind, your marketing plan can change from year to year or even per project/program. You can create a marketing plan for your business overall or for a specific program you are working on within your business. Most important, you should stick with your plan as written for future analysis and to understand what works and what doesn’t work. It is not wise to jump off the plan and do other than what is in your plan. You will get off track, lose sight of your objectives and possibly lose a lot of money.

Here are some things you want to consider when creating a marketing plan:

  1. Your marketplace and where your business stands
  2. Business strengths and weaknesses
  3. Business objectives
  4. Strategies and tactics you want to implement
  5. Budget (how much you are willing to spend to implement the strategies and tactics)

I would not recommend you doing this alone. You should consultant a professional and let them work with you on your plan to make sure you are creating a strategy that is cost effective and in line with your business goals.
